Groom & Groomsmen at The Corinthian Houston Wedding

Choosing Your Groomsmen

It’s time to start going down the list of your close friends, reminisce about the good times you’ve shared with each, and make a big decision. You thought your proposal days were over but not until you’ve asked all of your buddies to be in your wedding party. Some “propose” through a phone or video call; others put together a box with personalized gifts.

When choosing a best man, some grooms have one, two, or none because they’re all equally close. One more thing to consider is positioning your groomsmen so you have a sense of where they will stand when they’re next to you on the big day. Some grooms organize this by how close they are to each groomsmen, years they’ve known each other, or height. It’s your call!

Getting these details in place early on will make the transition easier as you start assigning duties, such as putting them in charge of planning the bachelor party and taking care of day-of duties on wedding day.

Attire

Think essentials FIRST: color and style. Depending on the season, certain palettes may be more popular, but it’s entirely up to you and your bride-to-be. For spring and summer, lighter tones are usually used to complement a softer palette. For example, light gray and khaki suits are frequently used, especially for outdoor weddings. In autumn and winter, darker tones such as burgundy and navy are popular choices.

The decisions for accessories follow close after that: ties (bow or regular), shoes to match your suit/tuxedo, socks, cufflinks, suspenders, vest, tie clips.

Some questions to think about when deciding your groomsmen’s attire include:

  • Should my groomsmen wear the same suit/tuxedo color as me, or should they wear a shade that complements what I wear?

  • For ties, should I have my best man wear a different color than the other groomsmen?

  • Should I alternate tie colors within our wedding color palette to give each groomsman a unique look?

  • What colors are the bridesmaids wearing? Should my groomsmen’s ties/attire match with the bridesmaid they’re paired with?

Put a Wedding Ring On It + Tastings

If your fiancée’s engagement ring came with a wedding band, then you can skip this step. If it didn’t, wedding band shopping for her and for you is really worth getting excited about. The emphasis here is to choose a band that complements her engagement ring in color and style.

Another important thing to do is to share your wedding ideas with your bride-to-be and planner, and attend meetings and tastings together. Some of our favorites include food/beverage/cake tastings and venue visits!

Celebrate Good Times, Come On!

Planning can get overwhelming sometimes. We totally get it. That’s why hiring a planner is so important to help take care of all the details. During this time, enjoy your engagement and find ways to celebrate with your bride-to-be by having date nights and mini getaways. The last thing we want you to feel is stressed because being engaged is such a special time in your life as you two plan for the start of the rest of your life together.
